For this spin combo we’ll be using upper/lower b

For this spin combo we’ll be using upper/lower body separation and spinning a flatland frontside 180 followed by a switch “bad ollie” and a switch backside 180.

1. Warm up by spinning some flatland frontside 180s using upper body rotation to start and scissoring your legs to bring the 180 around. Then put it together with a switch backside 180 to complete the sequence into a 360.

2. Next, work on your switch “bad ollie.” In our ollie trick tip we worked on landing with a clean two-footed landing. For a “bad ollie,” you want to take off on from the tail like normal, but land on the nose. This move is essential to giving the full trick it’s stalled out late switch backside 180 style.

3. Now put them together. It helps to sequence them out for your first couple of tries. Rotate the frontside 180 with you upper body, scissor the legs around to switch, pop the switch bad ollie, and then complete the trick with the switch backside 180.

4. Now that you have the framework for the whole trick, start adjusting the timing of the movements to blend them together. Use the upper body rotation to start the spin, but also to get your shoulders ready for the switch bad ollie.

5. As the board comes around through the first 180 you should already be starting the movements for your switch ollie.

6. Continue the rotation of your shoulders through the bad ollie so that by the time the nose is hitting the snow to land the switch bad ollie your shoulders are already halfway through the second 180.

Flatland spins, butters, and jumps are a great way to practice edge control, balance, and spin awareness. You can combo all sorts of other movements into and out of this basic trick to put your own style on it!

Terje was one of my first instructors. Maybe not i

Terje was one of my first instructors. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but for anyone growing up and snowboarding in the early 90s, he was the source of inspiration for so much of what we learned.

Our instructors were the early snowboarding films like The Garden and Pocahontas, the TB and Mack Dawg films, and every issue of Transworld Snowboarding and Snowboarder. Terje’s method is one of the first tricks I remember watching over and over and then trying to replicate on snow.

Thanks @chocorompe for the turns last week, it was truly a pleasure to ride with you. Your timeless, effortless style is just as much of an inspiration now as it was to 10-year-old me! And thanks @pat_ehhhh for the invite!

WNTR Ski & Snowboard Training: Snowsports instruction, adventures, and life on snow!

For this spin combo we’ll be using upper/lower body separation and spinning a flatland frontside 180 followed by a switch “bad ollie” and a switch backside 180.

A tripod is a fun flatland move to add to your bag of tricks. <br /><br />For this variation of the tripod, we’ll be turning toeside and flexing over the nose of the snowboard. Most directional snowboards have softer noses, and as a result, this tripod can be easier to learn.<br /><br />1. Warm up by moving over the nose and tail of your snowboard. Hit up our videos on nose presses and tail presses for some drills to start with. <br />2. On flat ground, flex your front ankle, knee and hip, and lean over the nose of your snowboard. Put your hands on either side of the snowboard and tighten your core like you’re doing a pushup while you lift the tail off the snow. The balance gets easier when you’re moving, but trying this on flat ground will give you an idea of the arm and core strength necessary to hold a tripod.<br />3. On some gentle, groomed terrain, make a toeside turn all the way back up the hill. Just as you’re about to stop, go into the tripod just like you practiced. As gravity takes hold, allow the snowboard to start to slide down the hill, dragging your hands in the snow.<br />4. To get out of the tripod, pull your rear knee back towards your chest, bringing the toe edge back into contact with the snow. Straighten out the board and stand up to keep moving. <br />5. Once you’re comfortable with the movement of getting into the tripod, you can make the turn smaller and smaller until you’re turning and popping up into the tripod. Explore flex and extension of your legs to change where your tripod is sliding!<br /><br />One last pro-tip: Note how I tuck my chin so that I can still look downhill while in the tripod!<br /><br />There are many variations of tripods, as well as ways to get in and out of tripods. Every day is a snow day!

Proper boot fit is one of the most important foundations for better snowboarding. A properly fitted and tightened boot will make sure that your body movements translate efficiently to snowboard performance. If your boot fit isn’t dialed, you’re going to have a bad time!

1. Snowboard socks are designed specifically for warmth and padding in the areas you need it, and are designed to wick moisture away from your foot. Your standard cotton socks just won’t do!

2. Wear one pair of socks, and only 1 pair. Pull them all the way up so there are no wrinkles or bunches around your toes or ankles.

3. Prepare your boot by loosening all the laces and opening it up. Slide your foot all the way into the boot, and kick your heel back a couple of times to make sure your foot is anchored.

4. Secure any velcro straps or latches on the inner boot, and then tighten the inner laces. With most boots, the inner lace is tightened by pulling a lace loop, and pushing a sliding lock down to the ankle. Make sure this is working - if your inner laces are loose, your foot will slide inside the boot even if the outer laces are tight. You want your inner-laces tight enough that you don’t feel your foot sliding around inside the liner, but not so tight as to cut off circulation. Circulation and proprioception (your ability to sense movement, action, and location) are key to to having a good day snowboarding.

5. Next tighten the outer laces. Common lacing systems include traditional laces, BOA dials, and pull-and-lock systems like the Burton Speedzone. Each style of lacing has pros and cons, but the key with all of them is to get the laces comfortably tight.

One last pro-tip: Pull any base layer or long johns up above your calf before putting on your socks and boots. Once your boots are on you can pull them down to the top of the boot, but your base layer should not be inside your boot!

Now that your boots are on, you’re ready to get out there and get after it!

For a method grab we want to grab the heelside of the board with our front hand. For a standard method grab, you’ll grab between the bindings, or for a “grasser” style method you’ll grab in front of the front binding.

1. Get comfortable on a small to medium sized jump that gives you enough air time for a grab, and hit it a few times to dial in your speed and warm up.

2. Approach the jump with your ankles, knees, and hips slightly flexed, and with your lead hand slightly over the toeside. This will allow for a slight amount of counter-rotation at takeoff and helps with tweaking the method.

3. As you pop at takeoff, unwind slightly so your front hand is over the heel edge, while flexing your knees and pull your heels up towards your butt.

4. As you grab the heelside with your lead hand, begin pushing your rear foot away from you, extending the rear hip joint and knee.

5. Because your front hand is grabbing the board, this essentially creates an anchor and as you push your rear foot away the board will come across your body creating the classic method look.

6. To land the method, let go of the grab and allow your core tension to unwind your upper and lower body back into alignment. Retract your legs back under you, and put the landing gear down.

As with many tricks, a bit of speed helps, so as you develop comfort, explore different speed and how much pop you’re using.

In this trick tip we’re going to work on a carved backside nose roll off the toes.

In previous videos we’ve worked on backside 180s and carved backside tail rolls. This is a very similar movement, except we’re going to keep our front leg extended so the nose stays on the ground.

This trick combines skills from carving and backside 180s in our previous videos. You should also be comfortable with basic switch riding.
.
1. Start in a toeside traverse. Open your shoulders towards the nose, flex your knees and hips, and then extend as you rotate your head and shoulders backside to create the rotation, just like a backside 180.

2. The moment you reach full extension you need to tighten your core (imagine getting punched in the stomach) and pull your hips back into alignment with your shoulders. You can also think about pulling your rear hamstring and foot around to your shoulder with your hips.

3. The difference with a nose roll is that when you pop you’re going to keep your weight over your front foot so the nose stays in the snow. Think about keeping your front leg extended while you pull your back foot aheel towards your butt.

4. Once you’re feeling comfortable with the timing of the pop and rotation, find a small roller and take it down the hill. Time your pop with the roller so that you’re pivoting around the nose right over the roller. The movement stays the same, but now focus on keeping your weight over the toes so you can land in a switch toeside carve.

As with many tricks, a bit of speed helps, so as you develop comfort, explore different speed and how much pop you’re using.

In this trick tip we’re going to work on a carved backside tail roll off the toes.

In previous videos we’ve taught backside 180s off the toes. This is a very similar movement, except we’re going to keep our rear leg extended so the tail stays on the ground.

The movement stays the same, but now focus on keeping your weight over the toes so you can land in a switch toeside carve.

As with many tricks, a bit of speed helps, so as you develop comfort, explore different speed and how much pop you’re using.
