Little throwback to the first trick tips we posted at the beginning of the 21-22 season!

What tricks and tips do you want us to include this season?

Ollies are one of the building blocks of freestyle. By shifting your weight over the tail you store energy in the board and spring into the air. This allows you to jump higher and further than just jumping off both feet.

1. On flat terrain, practice flexing your legs while keeping your shoulders parallel to the snow. As you reach the bottom of your range, begin shifting towards the tail of the snowboard by flexing your rear knee more than your front knee. When you feel more weight over your back foot begin pulling up on your front foot while extending your rear leg. This loads the tail of the snowboard allowing you to generate pop.

2. As you pop into the air, pull your knees up to bring the board further off the snow.

3. Extend your legs to land with both feet simultaneously, flexing to absorb the landing. Really focus on maintaining a parallel relationship between your shoulders and the terrain.

4. Common issues: If you’re landing on the nose, you’re jumping too hard off the back foot and dipping your lead shoulder down towards the snow. If you’re landing on the back foot, your weight is too far over the tail at takeoff and you’re not getting the snowboard to level out in the air.

5. Now you’re ready to try it moving. Find a gentle downhill slope that allows you to ride straight down the hill at a slow speed. While sliding down the hill, begin just shifting towards the tail and pulling the nose off the snow. This gives you the initial feel of storing energy in the tail, without worrying about the pop just yet.

6. When you’re comfortable flexing towards the tail, you’re ready to get into the air. Just like you did in the flats, shift towards the tail and pop and pull the board into the air. Extend your legs to catch the landing and flex to absorb!

Experiment with your Ollies by timing them off bumps, rollers, cat-tracks, and other terrain.

For a method grab we want to grab the heelside of

For a method grab we want to grab the heelside of the board with our front hand. For a standard method grab, you’ll grab between the bindings, or for a “grasser” style method you’ll grab in front of the front binding.

1. Get comfortable on a small to medium sized jump that gives you enough air time for a grab, and hit it a few times to dial in your speed and warm up.

2. Approach the jump with your ankles, knees, and hips slightly flexed, and with your lead hand slightly over the toeside. This will allow for a slight amount of counter-rotation at takeoff and helps with tweaking the method.

3. As you pop at takeoff, unwind slightly so your front hand is over the heel edge, while flexing your knees and pull your heels up towards your butt.

4. As you grab the heelside with your lead hand, begin pushing your rear foot away from you, extending the rear hip joint and knee.

5. Because your front hand is grabbing the board, this essentially creates an anchor and as you push your rear foot away the board will come across your body creating the classic method look.

6. To land the method, let go of the grab and allow your core tension to unwind your upper and lower body back into alignment. Retract your legs back under you, and put the landing gear down.

As with many tricks, a bit of speed helps, so as you develop comfort, explore different speed and how much pop you’re using.

In this trick tip we’re going to work on a carved backside nose roll off the toes.

In previous videos we’ve worked on backside 180s and carved backside tail rolls. This is a very similar movement, except we’re going to keep our front leg extended so the nose stays on the ground.

This trick combines skills from carving and backside 180s in our previous videos. You should also be comfortable with basic switch riding.

1. Start in a toeside traverse. Open your shoulders towards the nose, flex your knees and hips, and then extend as you rotate your head and shoulders backside to create the rotation, just like a backside 180.

2. The moment you reach full extension you need to tighten your core (imagine getting punched in the stomach) and pull your hips back into alignment with your shoulders. You can also think about pulling your rear hamstring and foot around to your shoulder with your hips.

3. The difference with a nose roll is that when you pop you’re going to keep your weight over your front foot so the nose stays in the snow. Think about keeping your front leg extended while you pull your back foot aheel towards your butt.

4. Once you’re feeling comfortable with the timing of the pop and rotation, find a small roller and take it down the hill. Time your pop with the roller so that you’re pivoting around the nose right over the roller. The movement stays the same, but now focus on keeping your weight over the toes so you can land in a switch toeside carve.

A great way to improve your toeside carving control and balance is to challenge yourself to jump out of a toeside carve, do a frontside 180, and land in another toeside carve.

1. Warm up with drills from our videos on carving and 180s.
2. On flat ground jump off your toes, and try to land on your toes. You can still use your ankle joint to absorb the landing, but if you flex them too much you’ll land flat instead of on your toes.
3. On some gentle green terrain, drop into the fall line to pick up a little speed, and then do a toeside carve across the hill. Flex your ankles, knees, and hips, and jump. Just like with other 180s we’ve practiced, rotate your shoulders open towards the nose, and then as you pop bring the board around by tightening your core.
4. As you land switch, put the toes down first, and lock into a switch toeside carve, flexing your knees and hips to absorb. Make sure you’re getting the 180 all the way around though, as under-rotating and landing on your toes will catch the edge.
5. In a carve, we’re relying on the forces generated through your momentum and edge angle to hold your body up. As you get more comfortable, more speed and more pop will make them easier.
6. Once you’ve got them on lock forward to switch, try them switch to forward, and then start linking them together!

One of our most received requests for tips has been around how to ride and survive bumps and moguls. The key to better bump riding is independent flex and extension in your front and back legs. With a little work on flexion and extension to absorb, you can quickly improve your bump riding!

1. Start with your board off and laying next to you. Step over the board by pulling your front leg up, over, and down, followed by your back leg.
2. Now try this same movement with your board on in the flats. This is similar to an ollie, but your goal isn’t to pop, it’s to move your legs independently.
3. Try again with a little movement. You’re focusing on bringing the nose off the ground, setting it back down as you bring the tail off the ground. Again, it’s not about popping, but training the skill of moving your legs independently. This skill will help us absorb.
4. Look for some small bumps on the side of a run you can roll over. Practice this same movement, timing the flex and extension with riding over the bump. Keep your shoulders and hips lined up over the snowboard to allow your knees and hips to fully flex and absorb.
5. When you’re feeling comfortable with the movement, take it into some bumps in a traverse. Feel how you’re able to flex and extend to absorb the bumps and roll over them.
6. As you develop skill with timing your flex and extension to absorb the bumps, you’ll find you can begin working on turning between the bumps. We’ll focus on that in a future video!

Little project with Phoozy's Spaceman

This trick uses skills we’ve previously worked on in presses, 180s, and 360s (watch those videos for a refresh). We’ll start with a frontside 180 into a press, followed by a switch backside 180 out.

Because this takes off and lands twice with a rotation, descriptions can get a little confusing. I’ll be using your forward direction stance and the true nose of the board.

1. You’re going to start with a basic frontside 180, but rather than landing stacked over the board, focus on landing with weight over your nose by flexing that ankle, knee, and hip more. Notice the difference in this video between landing a standard 180 and riding out switch compared to landing in a press with weight over the front foot.

2. When you feel comfortable with the spin and landing in a press, add more spin to the takeoff. This should feel very similar to the 360 over a roller we worked on a few weeks ago.

3. Land in the press and allow your upper body to continue rotating past the 180. Watch how my shoulders and arms continue the rotation while my eyes stay locked on to a point just up hill from the nose stalling the rotation.

4. As your shoulders come around towards the 360 rotation, you should feel tension in your core. This is your cue to pull up on your back foot and extend off your lead leg, popping off the nose.

5. When your board leaves the snow, use that core tension to unwind and allow the snowboard to spin back into alignment with your shoulders.

6. Flex your ankles, knees, and hips to land and lock in on the toe edge just like we practiced with 360s.

You can play with these on flat ground, but where they really get fun is timing them of small rollers and side hits!

4. Landing on the toes to feather and lock into a landing is an important skill for many tricks. The key is to use your ankle joint (in addition to your knees and hips) to absorb while continuing to pivot the snowboard around to finish the spin. Then quickly increase your edge angle to stop rotation. This should give you confidence about your ability to land even if you under-rotate your spin, and is also the skill you’ll use to lock spins in and stop the rotation.

5. Now you’re ready to take it to a 360. Find a small roller that will give you some extra air time. It’s important to time the rotation and the pop as you hit the apex of the roller. Add a little more energy to your prewind, unwind, and pop and then pull your hips and legs all the way around. Land on the toe edge and lock the edge into the snow to stop your rotation! Explore different rollers and side hits, and cat-tracks to develop comfort and skills with your spins!

3. The difference with a nose roll is that when you pop you’re going to keep your weight over your front foot so the nose stays in the snow. Think about keeping your front leg extended while you pull your back foot aheel towards your butt.

4. Once you’re feeling comfortable with the timing of the pop and rotation, find a small roller and take it down the hill. Time your pop with the roller so that you’re pivoting around the nose right over the roller. The movement stays the same, but now focus on keeping your weight over the toes so you can land in a switch toeside carve.

As with many tricks, a bit of speed helps, so as you develop comfort, explore different speed and how much pop you’re using.

In this trick tip we’re going to work on a carve

In this trick tip we’re going to work on a carved backside tail roll off the toes.

In previous videos we’ve taught backside 180s off the toes. This is a very similar movement, except we’re going to keep our rear leg extended so the tail stays on the ground.

This trick combines skills from carving and backside 180s in our previous videos. You should also be comfortable with basic switch riding.

1. Start in a toeside traverse. Flex your knees and hips, and then extend as you rotate your head and shoulders backside to create the rotation, just like a backside 180.
2. The moment you reach full extension you need to tighten your core (imagine getting punched in the stomach) and pull your hips back into alignment with your shoulders. You can also think about pulling your front knee and foot around to your shoulder with your hips.
3. The difference with a tail roll is that when you pop you’re going to keep your rear leg extended so the tail drags in the snow. As the nose comes off the snow, extend your back leg to drag the tail.
4. Keep your rear ankle extended through the first half of this rotation so that the heel edge can’t catch in the snow. In a traverse, this trick will naturally land on the heelside.
5. Once you’re feeling comfortable with the timing of the pop and rotation, find a small roller and take it down the hill. Time your pop with the roller so that you’re dragging the tail right over the roller. The movement stays the same, but now focus on keeping your weight over the toes so you can land in a switch toeside carve.
